Bariatric and Wellness Program
About Morbid Obesity
Morbid Obesity is a condition in which a patient has a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or greater, which is generally 100 or more pounds over ideal body weight. The disease carries serious medical, psychological, and social ramifications. The severity of morbid obesity is related to the development of serious comorbidities which include: diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, arthritis, stroke, respiratory problems, blood clots, heart attack and heart disease to name a few. According to the National Institutes of Health, the only effective, long-term solution for morbid obesity is weight loss surgery.
Solutions for Success
The Bariatric and Wellness Program is a state-of-the-art, multi-faceted approach to weight loss. It is rooted in medically supervised interventions, education, behavioral modification strategies, and a comprehensive pre- and post-surgical program for nutritional, medical and psychological support. The Brookhaven team works with each patient to devise an appropriate weight loss surgical plan including options for open and laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, as well as laparoscopic adjustable gastric band (LAP-BAND®) surgery. Brookhaven also offers an open Roux-en-Y bypass surgery with a very small pouch called the Sapala-Wood Micropouch®. This procedure has been performed on over 4,000 patients and, to date, has not required a revision due to the Micropouch® stretching or dilating.
On-going Support
Brookhaven recognizes the long-term goal of weight loss after surgery. It doesn't end right after the operation. It's an ongoing process. That's why we educate our patients and remain in contact with them. We provide nutritional information, including state-of-the-art micronutrient supplementation, proper exercise advice, and medical and psychological support. Our surgeons perform well over a hundred weight loss surgeries each year. They also check your laboratory values and provide a weight loss program over the long term. Importantly, the program teaches you when to eat, what to eat, where to eat and how to eat.

About the Sapala-Wood Micropouch®
The Sapala-Wood Micropouch® procedure is an operation in which the top of the stomach is not stapled, but completely divided, creating a grape sized "micropouch" separate from the lower part of the stomach. The small intestine is also divided into two ends. This division allows the food to bypass the stomach so that it will not receive any food or liquids, but still maintain its function because of its nerve and blood supply interaction. The innovative Micropouch® empties more rapidly than previously used 30-cc pouches and allows you to absorb fewer calories, resulting in sustained weight loss. This is why patients are able to maintain a healthy body weight more than 10 years following surgery.
