Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center

Nutrition

The Department of Nutritional Services prepares meals in accordance with various dietary requirements, i.e. regular, sodium controlled, soft-bland, fat-controlled and calorie-controlled. Each diet is planned to meet specific medical needs or restrictions. Menus distributed to patients offer only those food selections permitted under the type of diet ordered by their physician. Kosher food is available upon request. The hospital's Nutritional Services Department also prepares "Meals on Wheels," the daily hot and cold meal service delivered by volunteers to shut-in's and the elderly. Registered Dietitians are on staff and available for dietary counseling on an inpatient as well as outpatient basis.

Nutrition Counseling

Nutrtion Counseling is more than a diet; it is assistance in making lifestyle changes that you agree to. Outpatient appointments make lifestyle changes easier for you to continue and incorporate these changes into your routine. It is important to bring family members to these meetings because they are often the primary cooks or caretakers, so they are encouraged to attend the outpatient appointments with the patient.

Brookhaven Nutritional Service Department is pleased to provide individual outpatient consultation for:

  • Diabetes
  • Kidney Disease
  • Celiac Disease and Gluten sensitivity
  • Heart Disease
  • Weight Reduction and other nutrition related conditions

The Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center philosophy is to create a nutrition program to support the specific needs of each individual. No two people ar the same; our staff will tailor each nutrition program to you and your lifestyle. Dietitians office: 631-687-2848 email: mfeeney@bmhmc.org

All consultation is by a Registered Dietitian (RD) and New York State Certified Dietitian Nutritionist (CDN). Depending on medical diagnosis, counseling may be covered by Medicare and or private insurance.
